Introduction
I performed extensive research looking for “my perfect composter!” I have found the most efficient composter, and one that does not release toxic chemicals into the compost. It’s an easy composter to use and is definitely my top choice – the one I feel confident in using, and I’m excited to share my findings with you.
Product Overview
Jonathan Ramious, a Swedish engineer, developed the Jora Compost Tumbler in 1989 to provide a means of continuing to compost through the harsh winters of Sweden in order to provide enough compost for their spring and summer growing season. This composter provides continuous composting. You don’t have to go through the stop and start routine with periods where you might need compost and the pile just isn’t ready. This composter has dual compartments as did the orginal design of Jonathan Ramious, which means you are filling one while the other one is cooking. It’s an attractive unit, not an eye-sore in your garden. It’s efficient and works faster than most. It continues to work in cooler weather when many other composters have stopped.
This product is a little pricey, and there are certainly less expensive ones on the market; however, in my opinion, it’s well worth the price. I have read over 100 composter reviews, and most all of them agree the Jora Composter is absolutely the prize. Its longevity, its fast action, it’s rodent and pest proof, its ability to compost in colder temperatures, its continuous production of compost, its clean process and its ease of operation makes it a great investment providing years of productivity. A note on plastic composters – be careful of toxic chemicals emitted from some plastics that are systemic and penetrate into the compost, then to your garden, and, if systemic, into your food. I also found in my research for “my perfect composter”, complaints of animals with sharp teeth being able to damage some of the plastic composters trying to get to the waste inside.
Positives
- This unit is constructed of sturdy, rust-resistant, galvanized steel and powder coated to an attractive hunter color for years of use.
- Dual chambers provide a continuous supply of compost.
- The stand is made of galvanized steel.
- It’s easy to tumble using the rotating handles for aeration, an essential part of composting.
- HDPE insulation (High Density Polyethylene, a stable non-toxic plastic) allows heat inside to rise to approximately 160°F.
- With the temperature rising to approximately 160°F., fresh waste starts to break down before it has time to rot.
- According to the Jora Company, the Jora Composter has been tested up to 200°F. and no BPAs from the HDPE insulation were found in the compost.
- Enclosing the dual chamber (they can also be locked) prevents rodents and pests from getting into the decomposing waste.
- Above ground elevation also keeps out the rodents and pests, and there’s no bending over to fill the chambers or to empty them. A wheelbarrow can easily be rolled under the composter doors to empty the chambers as needed.
- Odors are minimal to none due to the enclosed chambers and proper composting. The compost usually smells similar to dirt. If there is an odor, it’s usually due to the waste being too wet. Click here for information on how to correct this problem or avoid it entirely.
- Compost in one chamber should be ready to use in three to four weeks, and the second chamber will start composting while refilling the first chamber rotating continuous compost for your garden and flower beds.
- Rain does not seep into the composter.
- Exposure to freezing temperatures does not cause the composter to crack.
- This composter holds up well with prolonged exposure to the sun.
- Since the compost heats up from the work of the microorganisms, the composter does not need to be in a sunny location, leaving you the option to place it anywhere in your garden.
- Visually, the Jora composter is well-built, well-designed and powder coated in hunter green, so it doesn’t become an eyesore in your garden.
- The manufacturer provides a one-year warranty.

Negatives
- Some find the assembly instructions difficult to understand. Solution: A video on the website www.joracomposters.com www.joracomposters.com that makes the assembly quite easy to follow.
- The vents leave openings large enough for insects to enter. Solution: Place a piece of screening material over the vents. These vents are extremely important for introducing air into the compost which is an essential part of the decomposition process. So NEVER cover these vents with a material that will reduce or stop the airflow.
- If placed directly onto the soil, the legs can sink a bit into the soil when it gets wet or soft. Solution: After assembly, place the composter legs on level blocks, pavers, or concrete.
- One person may be able to assemble this unit, but the assembly goes much easier with two. Solution: Plan to assemble your composter when you have someone who can help you.
- The screws, nuts, and bolts are all stainless steel. However, if you’re using an electric screwdriver, the heads of the screws may strip. Solution: Manually place the screws into the predrilled holes.
